Dear Sir, Madam,
On behalf of the executive staff of HagaMUN 2022, it is my great pleasure to invite you to the twelfth annual session of the Haganum Model United Nations.
This year’s conference will take place from the 11th until the 13th of March 2022, at Gymnasium Haganum, which is located in the city centre of the international city of peace and justice: The Hague.
The Hague hosts many international summits and is home to various embassies, UN organs and many international organisations especially in the field of international law and diplomacy.
A few examples are the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the headquarters of EUROPOL. This allows us to invite guest speakers from organisations that are internationally recognized. Besides the international involvement of The Hague, the city is also the seat of the Dutch government, the parliament, the Council of State and the Supreme Court. The Hague has a truly international atmosphere which makes this city a perfect venue for an MUN-conference.
At MUN, participants simulate the United Nations. This raises awareness in the students about the future but also current issues across the world. It gives students from different nationalities or religions the opportunity to share their opinions and to cooperate. The children of today will work towards the best solutions for current problems by lobbying and debating during conferences. These solutions may become reality in the near future.
Every year, enthusiastic students from Gymnasium Haganum organize a high-quality conference. The program of the weekend will include various workshops, documentaries and guest speakers. This warm and welcoming environment will hopefully lead to interesting debates and realistic solutions. Every year, HagaMUN proves challenging enough for both experienced and beginning participants. Thanks to MUN, the youth of today will be confronted with current world issues, which helps them improve the world of tomorrow. HagaMUN is known for its friendly character; listening to every single voice and hosting fruitful debate.
The executive staff has chosen “Safeguarding a child’s right to innocence” as the theme for our 2022 conference. Even though the situation has seen worldwide improvement in recent years, the prevalence of sexual violence towards children remains an incredibly heartbreaking and concerning issue.
During the crisis that has been Covid-19, the topic of sexual assault has fallen to the background. However, with everyone locked up at home, this occurrence has actually become more prevalent these past few years. With child exploitation defined as the using of a minor for profit, power, status, sexual gratification, or some other purpose, it’s estimated that even in wealthy countries, the percentage of boys that have been exploited is more than 5%, and the percentage of girls is more than 15.
This truly is an issue that spans the globe, though the specifics are different everywhere. In the United States, 200.000 child marriages took place between the years of 2000 and 2015, in Bangladesh, cattle-fattening drugs are given to children to make them appear of age, and in parts of Africa, it is believed that sexual intercourse with a virgin will cure a man of AIDS
Even though it may not have been the main goal, the United Nations have grown into arguably the most important human rights organisation on Earth. In the Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989, the rights of each child have been decided upon and recognised by each UN nation, except for the United States. This includes each child’s right to be protected from abuse and exploitation.
Especially in this year of crisis, the attention is focused on the flashy news, when sometimes the worst happens in the shadows. As the HagaMUN 2022 Secretariat we’d like to shed some light on everything that is happening around the topic of child exploitation and what we can do to help the cause of minimizing it.
The secretariat of HagaMUN 2022 has decided that this HagaMUN will be fully engaged and committed to unfolding this year’s theme. This means that you can expect many issues concerning safeguarding children around the world with correspondingly compelling debate. During our conference, especially the Special Conference, we will debate on such issues.
We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to our school and The Hague, the embodiment of international cooperation. This year our registration procedure is slightly different. Registration won’t operate through MyMUN, a link to register can be found below or on our site. We expect the registration to be done by the 31st of December 2021.
Of course, we are more than happy to answer any questions or inquiries that you may have, so please feel free to contact us any time at email@example.com
We hope to meet you all at HagaMUN 2022!
Osca van den Bosch, Secretary-General HagaMUN 2022
