Welcome to HagaMUN 2020!

Dear Sir, Madam,

On behalf of the executive staff of HagaMUN 2020, it is my great pleasure to invite you to the eleventh annual session of the Haganum Model United Nations.

This year’s conference will take place from the 6th until the 8thof March 2020, at Gymnasium Haganum, which is located in the city centre of the international city of peace and justice: The Hague.

The Hague hosts many international summits and is home to various embassies and many international organisations especially in the field of international law and diplomacy.
A few examples are the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the headquarters of EUROPOL. This gives us the opportunity to invite guest speakers from organisations that are internationally recognized. Besides the international involvement of The Hague, the city is also the seat of the Dutch government, the parliament, the council of state and the Supreme Court. The Hague has a truly international atmosphere which makes this city a perfect venue for an MUN-conference.

At MUN, participants simulate the United Nations. This raises awareness in the students about the future but also current issues across the world. It gives students from different nationalities or religions the opportunity to share their opinions and to cooperate with each other. The children of today will work towards the best solutions for current problems by lobbying and debating during conferences. These solutions may become reality in the near future.

Every year, enthusiastic students from Gymnasium Haganum organize a high-quality conference. The program of the weekend will include various workshops, documentaries and guest speakers. This warm and welcoming environment will lead to interesting debates and realistic solutions. Every year, HagaMUN proves challenging enough for both experienced and beginning participants. Thanks to MUN, the youth of today will be confronted with current world issues, which helps them improve the world of tomorrow.

The executive staff has chosen “Empowering the sustainability revolution” as the theme for our 2020 conference. Nowadays, you can no longer ignore nor deny the climate crisis that is our reality. In our opinion the time of passive attitudes has passed. We are currently at a defining moment.

According to the UN, after more than a century and a half of industrialization, deforestation and large-scale agriculture, quantities of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have risen to record levels not seen in three million years. The Fifth Assessment Report confirms that climate change is real and human activities are the main reason.

It is established that we have a climate crisis. At this moment, the most urgent question is, how do we secure a sustainable future? We truly believe in a sustainable revolution, in order to contain the climate change and stabilize the future. Innovation is already being adopted in many sectors. But there is still so much that could be handled more efficiently and sustainably.
During the UN Climate Change Summit 2019 in New York, a willing coalition gathered to discuss the pressing issue. During this MUN, we would like to use this as an example. Delegations assembling to debate what we, as a society can accomplish if we work together towards a better, sustainable future.

The secretariat of HagaMUN 2020 has decided that this HagaMUN will be fully engaged and committed to unfolding this year’s theme. This means that you can expect many issues concerning the challenges of the sustainable revolution with correspondingly compelling debate. During our conference especially the Special Conference will debate on such issues.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to our school and to The Hague, the embodiment of international cooperation. This year our registration procedure is slightly different. As of last year, we are working with Mymun. A link to our Mymun page to register for various positions at our conference is given under ‘Application’. We expect the registration to be done by the 22th of November 2019. Since we are trying to host an eco-friendly conference, no hard-copies of this First Mailing will be sent.

Of course, we are more than happy to answer any questions or inquiries that you may have, so please feel free to contact us any time at info@hagamun.org
We hope to meet you all at HagaMUN 2020!

Yours sincerely, Lidewij Tuinhout, Secretary-General HagaMUN 2020
